| Potchefstroom
All our formal tours start and end in Potchefstroom. So, welcome in Potchefstroom – one of
the oldest towns in the North West Province. Potchefstroom is known as a
historic town in terms of the former pioneers who came to settle here from the
Cape Province. It is then named after a well known “Voortrekker”
leader, Hendrik Potgieter. The Mooi river is also a well known landmark of this
tree rich town. Potchefstroom is also a university city; the Potchefstroom
campus of the North West University is situated here. Potchefstroom has become well known as the home of one of the biggest (mainly Afrikaans) art festivals in the country. Annually, by the end of September/beginning of October, the Aardklop Art Festival brings thousands of people from all over the country - and even from abroad - to Potchefstroom to enjoy a festival of music, shows, art, culture and a general enjoyable togetherness of people.
The areas
surrounding Potchefstroom is farming ground where you get maize crops on a large
scale. Cattle and sheep farming are also done here. In some parts of the North
West Province you also get game reserves. One of the most well known game
reserves is the Pilanesberg Game Reserve situated very near to famous Sun City
(about one and a half hours drive from Potchefstroom). About 30 km outside
Potchefstroom the famous Vredefort Dome is situated. It is a mountainous area in
a otherwise flat province which was caused by the fall of a meteorite millions
of years ago. The Vredefort Dome was awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in
2005 and the expectation is that the area will attract more and more tourists to Potchefstroom and the North West Province.

Mozambique Mozambique is to a
great extent part of unexplored Africa. Maputo, the capital, is approximately
100 km/65 miles from the Lebombo border post. From there-on we travel in a north
easterly direction along the coast line. Picturesque places on the route
include: - Macia (next to the Bilene
Lake)
- Xai-Xai (A fairly large town after
you've crossed the Limpopo River)
- Quissico (a
little village from where the beautiful "Great Lakes" of Mozambique
can be seen)
- Inhambane (named after the
breathtaking cove in the sea)
- Barra, our final
destination (about 600 km / 375 miles from the Lebombo border post).
The roads are generally speaking in a fairly good
condition; however, there are some potholes here and there. One of
the amazing aspects of Mozambique is the changing scenery as you travel further
along through the country: from dense forests, wavy grass plains to the blue
waters of the Indian Ocean with its white beaches and coco-nut palms.
We stay at Barra in a luxurious house with all facilities and meals included.
Obviously the fish and seafood are of outstanding quality! Despite
the beautiful scenery, other activities include: deep sea angling (various fish
of prey to be found e.g. barracuda, sail fish and numerous others), dolphin and
whale watching, "dow" (sailboat) trips to a village opposite side of
the cove (Maxixe) and snorkeling. The eccentric Bar Babelaza,
about 5 km from where we stay, is always there for something to eat and drink as
well as to have a chat with some other tourists.
